Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose Midwives in Partnership?

Our clients are provided with continuity of carer, who provide a quality midwifery service with an individualised approach and a personal touch. This provides our clients with security and ability to feel confident and comfortable throughout their pregnancy and birth. Working with other medical professionals permits our clients to access a range of services tailored to their individual needs, facilitating holistic care. All information is evidenced based, and given in an unbiased manner to allow you and your partner to make informed choices regarding your pregnancy, birth and parenting. Pregnancy childbirth and parenting is a very special and personal time, our service acknowledges this fact.

Do I continue NHS hospital care?

Your independent midwife will carry out all your antenatal checks, so there is no need for long waits at a clinic or hospital to see an NHS midwife. However, if circumstances arise in which you may need to be seen by an obstetrician or other medical specialist, your midwife can and will refer you.

What if I'm not sure where to have my baby?

Many women are unsure whether to have a home or hospital birth. Whatever you decide we will be there to provide you with information and support. All Midwives in Partnership midwives are fully trained in home births and water births.

Due to our home assessments to establish your onset of labour, that's a decision you can make, or change on the day!

What training do you have to deal with an emergency during birth?

All Midwives in Partnership midwives are fully trained for managing obstetric emergencies. Annual updates in maternal and neonatal resuscitation, as well as obstetric emergencies are undertaken to ensure competent practitioners. Our supervisor of midwives also ensures standards of safety in practice, and all our equipment carried is maintained.

What equipment do you carry?

All equipment necessary for a homebirth and any obstetric emergencies are carried, including resuscitation equipment and oxygen for mum and babe.

What about after my baby is born, what care do you offer?

As with all our care, your postnatal care plan is individualised. Our aim is to have independent confident parents. Parenting skills and care of the newborn is integrated in your care package, and care continues up to 28 days after the birth of your baby. Contact does not stop after 28 days, we also provide telephone support for a further two weeks.

How do you involve my partner?

Our role is to facilitate the best pregnancy and birth experience you can have in the circumstances that arrive. Our aim is to include our client's birth partner and family members. Partners can be involved as much or a little as they feel comfortable, but they are very much part of the experience and made to feel so. At 36 weeks we have a birth talk with you and your birth partner in which the role you want us to play and that of your partner is discussed. However the situation may change on the day which is also fine, we're very flexible and aim to facilitate you and your partners needs. Many partners call us to discuss fears or concerns they may have, which is great, we are there to support all of you.
